Showy Goldenrod
(24-36" high x 24-36" wide) Tall clusters of ochre yellow flowers make Showy Goldenrod a beacon for pollinators, perfectly complementing the Coneflowers, Sedums, Asters, and Joe Pye Weed that often bloom nearby. Alas, poor Goldenrod has been wrongly accused of causing hay fever or allergies, which are in fact instigated by the lightweight, wind-blown pollen of grasses, trees, and certain perennials such as ragweed that bloom in a similar season. Goldenrod, on the other hand, produces heavy, sticky pollen and relies on pollinators to move the pollen from flower to flower. Rugged and easy to grow, goldenrod spreads by underground rhizomes to form a large, long-lived stand. Plant it in a spot in full sun and well-drained soil, where this deer-resistant native has room to spread. Tolerates clay soils. Hardy in zones 3-8.
