Anise Hyssop
(24-42 in tall x 12-16 in wide) Anise Hyssop is a summertime anchor to the garden, providing long, nectar-laden flowers that bloom from mid-summer to fall. Fragrant flowers and foliage have a scent that’s minty meets licorice-anise and will attract many pollinators. Plant with other summer bloomers such as Echinacea, Agastache, Rudbeckia, and ornamental grasses, or add it to a fragrant herb garden. Its pale purple flowers harmonize beautifully with other summer blossoms. Native to the Northwest, it is found throughout most of the US and Canada. It’s a sturdy, robust grower and will spread over time to form attractive clumps that can be divided and replanted. Plant Anise Hyssop in a sun-to-part-shade location in loamy or light clay soil that drains well. No fertilizers or amendments needed, and once established it’s a drought-tolerant, pest-resistant perennial. Good as cut flowers and as a container plant, the flowers also make dried bouquets (hang upside down in shaded spot).
